II. CONTENDING FOR THE FAITH: VS 3-7
A. These were the urgent needs for contending for the faith. v 3
1. Contending for the faith was needful. v 3, 1 John 4:3
2. Contending for the faith was reasonable. v 3, Romans 12:1-2
3. Contending for the faith was desirable. v 3, Romans 1:16
a). The faith is the total sum of the gospel system. Gal. 3:25
b). Christians should earnestly contend for the total sum of the gospel

B. These are the reasons for contending for the faith. v 4
1. False teachers are stealthily. v 4, 2 Cor. 11:13-15
a). False teachers are deceiving in their appearance. Matt. 7:15
b). False teachers can not be trusted. 1 John 4:1
2. False teachers will liberalize the truth of God. v 4, Gal. 1:6-9
a). False teachers teach that religious error is truth. Isa. 5:20
b). False teachers teach that religious truth is error. John 8:44
3. False teachers will finally oppose the truth of God. v 3
a). False teachers will reject the creation and the redemption of

b). False teachers will deny the faith. 1 Tim. 5:8
C. These are the motivations for contending for the faith. vs 4-7
1. God destroyed the ancient Israelites. v 5, 1 Cor. 10:1-5, Heb.

3. God destroyed the Cities which were on the plains. v 7, Gen. 19:23-25
III. THE MASTERS OF DECEIT: VS 8-15
A. These are the characteristics of false teachers. vs 8-11
1. False teachers speak evil language. vs 8-10
a). False teachers will rail at dignities: God, Christ, man and the
truth. James 3:10-11
b). Michael the archangel would not rail at the devil. Zech. 3:10-11
2. False teachers manifest evil deeds. v 11
a). False teachers will follow the way of Cain. v 11 1). The way of
Cain was the way of worshipping God in error. Gen. 4:1-8, Heb. 11:4 2).
The way of Cain is still being manifested. Gal. 1:6-9
b). False teachers will promote the error of Balaam. v 11 1). The
error of Balaam was desiring to sell the truth for error. Num. 22:5-7 2).
The error of Balaam is still being practiced. 2 Tim. 4:3-4 C). False teachers
will encourage the gainsaying of Core. v 11 1). The
gainsaying of Core was his rebellion against Divinely constituted authority.
Numbers 16:1-35 2). The gainsaying of Core is still in existence. Titus

B. These are the disappointments of false teachers. vs 12-13
1. False teachers have become fearless. v 12, 1 Tim. 4:2
2. False teachers are waterless. v 12, Prov. 25:14
3. False teachers are fruitless. v 12, Romans 6:21
4. False teachers are shameless. v 13, Isa. 57:20

C. These will be the punishments for false teachers. vs 14-15

IV. THE VICTORY OF THE SAINTS: VS 16-25
A. These are the mandates for that victory. vs 16-19
1. Christians can not follow religious error. v 16
a). False teachers are murmurers. Phil. 2:14
b). False teachers are complainers. Prov. 19:3
c). False teachers show partiality. James 2:9
2. Disciples must follow the truth. vs 17-19
a). A saint must remember the truth. v 17, John 8:31-32
b). A Christian should know that mockers will come. v 18, Gal. 6:6-9
c). A disciple ought to understand their traits. v 19, Romans 16:17-18
B. These are the motivations for that victory. vs 20-21
1. Christians must increase their faith in God. v 20, Mark 9:23
2. Disciples should multiply their praying unto God. v 20, James 5:16
3. Saints should deepen their love for the truth. v 21, 1 John 5:3
C. These are the ways to enhance that victory. vs 22-23
1. Christians should help those persons who are weak in the faith.
v 22, Romans 15:1-3
2. Disciples need to warn the wicked person of their evil way. v 23,
Ezek. 3:18-19
C. These are the assurances of that victory. vs 24-25
1. The Lord has the power to keep us from falling. v 24, Romans 8:37
2. The Lord has the wisdom to keep us from falling. v 25, 2 Peter
2:9
