LUKE CHAPTER 9

I. THE LIMITED COMMISSION OF THE TWELVE: VS 1-6

A. These were the arrangements of the twelve. v 1 1. The twelve were called. 2. The twelve were given power. 3. The twelve were given authority. B. These were the commissions of the twelve. v 2 1. The twelve were sent to preach the Kingdom of God. 2. The twelve were sent to heal the sick. C. These were the instructions for the twelve. vs 3-5 1. The people would provide for them. 2. If the twelve would not be received in a city, they were to leave that city as a testimony against them. D. These were the responses of the twelve. v 6 1. The twelve departed for their journey. 2. The twelve preached the gospel. 3. The twelve healed the sick. II. THE GUILT OF SIN: VS 7-9 A. This is the awareness of sin. v 7 (The hearing of Jesus makes the sinner aware of his condition in life.) Romans 3:10,23 B. This is the fruits of sin. v 7 (Sin makes a person to be perplexed and troubled.) Romans 6:23 C. This was the guilt of sin. vs 7-9 (The act of beheading John, the Baptist was a sin.) 1 John 3:4 III. JESUS FEEDS THE MULTITUDE: VS 10-17 A. This was the occasion for that miracle. vs 10-12 (The multitude was hungry.) B. This was the command for that miracles. vs 13-15 (The multitude had to set down in groups of fifty.) C. This was the reality of that miracle. v 16 (The miracle was performed.) D. This was the blessing of that miracle. v 17 (The people had plenty to eat.) IV. THE GREAT CONFESSION: VS 18-22 A. This was the motivation for that confession. v 18 (Jesus asked, "Whom say the people that I am?") B. This was the reason for that confession. v 19 (There were many different opinions of Christ.) C. This was the opportunity for that confession. v 20 (Jesus asked, "Whom say ye that I am?") D. This was the truth for that confession. v 20 (Peter said, "The Christ of God.") E. This was the charge for that confession. vs 21-22 (They were not to reveal that truth at that particular time.) V. THE TERMS OF OUR DISCIPLESHIP: VS 23-28 A. These are the conditions for our discipleship. v 23 1. A Christian must deny himself. Romans 8:13, 1 Cor. 9:27 2. A disciple ought to take up his cross. 2 Cor. 12:7-10 3. A saint should follow Christ. 1 Peter 2:21 B. These are the reasons for our discipleship. vs 24-26 1. A person can lose his own soul. Matt. 10:28 2. A person can save his own soul. Heb. 10:38-39 C. These are the blessings for our discipleship. v 28 1. Christians are citizens in the Kingdom of God. Luke 17:20-21, Acts 2:47 2. Saints must work in the Kingdom of God. Heb. 12:28-29 VI. THE TRANSFIGURATION OF CHRIST: VS 28-36 A. This was the preparation for His transfiguration. v 28 (Jesus prayed.) B. This was the glory of His transfiguration. v 29 (Jesus was spiritually glorified.) C. This was the concern of His transfiguration. vs 30-31 (There was concern over His future death.) D. This was the misunderstanding of His transfiguration. vs 32-33 (Peter did not know what he was saying about Moses, Elias and Christ.) E. This was the purpose of His transfiguration. vs 34-35 (This transfiguration was to emphasize the church age, not the tabernacle age.) VII. JESUS HEALS THE DEMONIACAL SON: VS 37-42 A. This was the popularity of Jesus. v 37 (Great crowds would meet Jesus.) B. This was the appeal to Jesus. v 38 (A man cried, "Master look upon my son.") C. This was the need for Jesus. vs 39-40 (The disciples of Jesus could not cast out the demon from the man's son.) D. This was the rebuke of Jesus. v 41 (Jesus rebuked His disciples for their lack of faith.) E. This was the blessing of Jesus. v 42 (Jesus cast out the demon which was in the man's son.) VIII. THE POWER OF GOD: VS 43-45 A. This was the scope of His power. v 43 (Jesus possessed mighty power.) B. This would be the manifestation of His power. v 44 (The power of Christ would demonstrated in His death, burial and resurrection.) Rev. 1:18 C. These were the factors of His power. v 45 1. Each person must understand His plan to redeem sinful man. Romans 1:16 2. If we fail to understand His plan to redeem sinful man, we could be robbed of His redeeming power. Romans 10:1-3 IX. TRUE GREATNESS: VS 46-48 A. This was the ambition for greatness. v 46 (One disciple wanted to be great than another disciple.) B. This was the example of true greatness. v 47 (A little child would be great in the Kingdom of God.) C. These were the traits of greatness. v 48 (Christians must develop a child-like character.) X. THE WORKS OF MEN: VS 49-50 A. Men witness the works of God. v 49 B. Men hinder the works of God. v 49 C. Men are rebuked for their works. v 50 XI. THE CARNAL MIND: VS 51-56 A. This is the nature of the carnal mind. vs 51-53 (The carnal mind rejects the authority of God.) B. This is the attitude of the carnal mind. v 54 (The carnal mind is vindictive.) C. This was the rebuke for the carnal mind. vs 55-56 (The Son of man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save men from sin.) Luke 19:10 XII. FOLLOWING CHRIST: VS 57-62 A. This was the command to follow Christ. vs 57,59,61 (All men should follow Christ.) B. This was the willingness to follow Christ. vs 57,59,61 (Those people would follow Christ after they had taken care of personal things.) C. These were the hindrances in following Christ, vs 58,60,62 1. One man loved his home more than he loved the Lord. v 58 2. One man loved a friend more than he loved the Lord. v 60 3. One man loved the pleasures of sin more than the loved the Lord. v 62 CHAPTER 10

I. THE COMMISSION OF THE SEVENTY DISCIPLES: VS 1-16

A. This was the commission for their work. v 1 (The seventy disciples were sent on a limited commission.) B. This was the need for their work. v 2 (The harvest was great, but the labors were few.) C. These were the instructions for their work. vs 3-9 1. The seventy disciples would be provided for because the labor is worthy of his hire. 2. The seventy disciples were to heal the sick. D. This was the fate of rejecting their work. vs 10-16 (Those persons who rejected their works would be condemned by the Lord.) II. THE RETURN OF THE SEVENTY DISCIPLES: VS 17-20 A. This was the joy of the seventy. v 17 (The seventy disciples were happy because the devils were subjected unto them because of the power of God.) B. This was the power of the seventy. vs 18-19 (The Lord said nothing could hurt them.) C. This was the blessing of the seventy. v 20 (The seventy disciples should have rejoiced because their names were written in the heaven.) III. THE REVELATION OF SPIRITUAL TRUTH: VS 21-24 A. These are the recipients of spiritual truth. v 21 1. Spiritual truth is not given unto the wise and prudent. 2. Spiritual truth is given unto babe. B. This is the manner of revealing spiritual truth. v 22 (Spiritual truth is Divinely revealed.) Col. 2:3 C. This is the blessing of receiving spiritual truth. vs 23-24 (The great men of God in the Old Testament longed to know those things.) IV. ETERNAL LIFE: VS 25-29 A. This was the desire for eternal life. v 25 (Eternal life is the greatest desire that we have in life.) 2 Cor. 5:1-4 B. This was the revelation of eternal life. v 26 (Eternal life is revealed in the scriptures.) John 5:39 C. These were the commandments for receiving eternal life. v 27 1. We must love the Lord our God more than anything else in the world. Matt. 6:33 2. We should love our neighbor in the right way. Romans 13:8-10 3. We need to love ourselves in the proper manner. Romans 12:3 D. This is the assurance of eternal life. v 29 (Christians must keep the commandments of God.) 1 John 5:4, James 2:10 E. This is the hindrance for eternal life. v 29 (Many people want to justify themselves.) Romans 10:1-3 V. WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR: VS 29-37 A. This was the need for helping our neighbor. v 30 (Our neighbor is any person that we can help: the poor victim.) B. This was the neglect of helping our neighbor. vs 31-32 (Some people seem to busy to help their neighbor.) C. This was the example of helping our neighbor. vs 33-35 (The good Samaritan did help the robbed victim.) D. This was the responsibility of helping our neighbor. vs 36-37 (Disciples are to go and do likewise.) VI. LESSONS FROM THE GOOD SAMARITAN: VS 30-37 A. These are the three pictures of life. 1. The poor victim is person who needed our help. v 30 2. The busy people are those persons who are to busy to help other people. vs 31-32 3. The good Samaritan is person who did help. vs 33-35 B. There are the attitudes of life. 1. The robber is person who thought what can I get from robbing other people in life. v 30 2. The busy people are those who thought how can I get out of helping other people in life. vs 31-32 3. The good Samaritan is person who thought what more can I do to help other people in life. vs 33-34 C. These are the three rules for life. 1. The iron rule would be: Might makes right: This is the robber. 2. The silver rule would be: Don't do unto other people as you would have them to do unto you: This is the busy people. 3. The golden rule would be: Do unto others as you would have them to do unto you: This is the good Samaritan. D. These are the three attitudes towards our neighbor. 1. The robber says: My neighbor is any person which I can rob. 2. The busy people think: My neighbor is any person who belongs unto my group or club. 3. The good Samaritan believes: My neighbor is any person which I can help. VII. THE LORD IN THE HOUSE OF MARTHA: VS 38-42 A. This was the Martha's reception for Christ. v 38 (She received Christ into her house.) B. The was Martha's real attitude toward Christ. vs 39-40 1. Martha failed to hear the words of Christ. v 39 2. Martha was to busy with worldly cares. v 40 C. Martha is rebuked by Christ. vs 41-42 (Martha was troubled over the cares of life.) CHAPTER 11

I. HOW TO PRAY: VS 1-4

A. This was the need for prayer. v 1 (Jesus believed in the power of prayer.) B. This was the manner of that prayer. vs 2-3 1. Christians should address their prayer to their heavenly Father so that His name can be glorified. v 2 2. The Kingdom has come so then disciples need to pray for the growth of the Kingdom. v 2, Acts 2:47, Heb 12:28-30 3. Christians should pray that the will of God will be done on earth as it is in heaven. v 2, 2 Peter 3:9 4. Brethren need to pray for the necessities of life. v 3, Phil. 4:19 5. Saints ought to pray for the forgiveness of their sins. v 4, 1 John 1:7-9 6. Disciples must pray for Divine deliverance from their temptations. v 4, 1 Cor. 10:13 II. THE VALUE OF PRAYER: VS 5-13 A. This is the importunity of prayers. vs 5-8 (Our praying to God will move the Lord to answer our prayers.) James 5:16 B. These are the encouragements for our prayers. vs 9-10 1. If Christians ask, they shall receive. vs 9-10 2. If saints seek, they shall find. vs 9-10 3. It disciples knock, they shall have openings. vs 9-10 C. This is the blessing of prayers. vs 11-13 (Our Prayers will give unto us the providence of God.) Romans 8:28 III. THE POWER OF SATAN: VS 14-26 A. These are the characteristics of his kingdom. vs 14-15 1. The devil can enslave men in his kingdom. v 14, Heb. 2:14-15 2. The devil can deceive men so that they will become his servants. v 15, 2 Cor. 4:3-4, 2 Cor. 11:14-15 B. This is the strength of his kingdom. vs 16-19 (The devil will not let his kingdom to be divided.) C. This is the weakness of his kingdom. vs 20-22 (The power of God is greater than the power of Satan.) Rev. 1:18 D. These are the revelations of his kingdom. vs 23-26 1. The devil will overcome the weak people of this world. 1 Peter 5:8 2. The devil will overcome the neglectful people of this world. Heb. 2:1-4 IV. THE BLESSINGS OF GOD: VS 27-28 A. This was the false concept of receiving God's blessings. v 27 (A lady thought that the mother of Mary should be blessed more than any other person.) B. These are the true ways of receiving the blessings of God. v 28 1. All people should hear the word of God. Romans 10:17 2. Christians must keep the word of God. Heb. 5:8-9 V. THE EVIL GENERATION: VS 29-36 A. This was the reason for that evil generation. v 29 (They were sign-seekers.) B. These were the condemnations of that evil generation. vs 30-32 1. Those people were given the supreme sign of life. v 30, 1 Cor. 15:1-4 2. Those people were given the supreme wisdom of life. v 31, Col. 2:3 3. Those people were given great opportunities in life. v 32, 2 Peter 3:9 C. These were the exposures of that evil generation. v 33 1. Their sins were exposed by the truth. v 33 2. Their intellect was revealed by the truth. v 34 3. Their deeds were manifested by the truth. vs 35-36 VI. JESUS DENOUNCED THE PHARISEES: VS 37-44 A. This invitation was given to Jesus by a Pharisee. v 37 (A Pharisee invited Jesus to his house.) B. This was the tradition of the Pharisees . v 38 (The Pharisee marveled that Jesus eat with unwashed hands.) C. These were the denouncements of the Pharisees. vs 39-41 1. The Pharisees neglected mercy and love. v 42 2. The Pharisees loved the praises of men more than they loved the praises of God. v 43 3. The Pharisees influenced other people for evil. v 44 VII. JESUS DENOUNCED THE LAWYERS: VS 45-54 A. This was the statement of the lawyer. v 45 (The lawyer said that Jesus was denouncing them also.) B. These were the denouncements of the lawyers. vs 46-52 1. The lawyers were inconsistent. v 46 2. The lawyers were persecutors. vs 45-51 3. The lawyers were false teachers. v 52 C. This was the plot of the lawyers. vs 53-54 (The lawyers tried to trick Jesus so that He might make an error.) CHAPTER 12

I. LESSONS ON FEAR: VS 1-12

A. This is what we should fear. vs 1-3 1. Christians should fear hypocrisy. v 1 2. Hypocrisy is the exposure of all sins. vs 2-3 B. This is whom we should fear. vs 4-12 1. Disciples should not fear man in any respect. v 4, Matt. 10:28 2. Saints should fear God in the sense of respect. vs 6-7, Eccles. 12:13-14 3. Brethren should fear the Son of man in the sense of respect. vs 8-9, Heb. 5:8-9 4. Christians should fear the Holy Spirit in the sense of respect. vs 10-12, Eph. 1:13-14 II. BEING COVETOUSNESS: VS 13-21 A. This was the expression of covetousness. v 13 (One brother would not divide an inheritance with another brother.) B. This was the warning against covetousness. vs 14-15 (Our life does not consist in the abundance of things which we possess.) C. This was the parable on covetousness. vs 16-20 1. This man was greatly blessed. v 16 2. This man had foolish thoughts. v 17 3. This man had evil plans. vs 18-19 4. This man was properly punished. v 20 D. This was the cure for covetousness. v 21 (All men should become rich toward God.) III. ANXIETY: VS 22-30 A. This was the forbiddance of anxiety. v 22 (We are told not to fear.) B. These are the causes of anxiety. v 22 1. Some people worry about what they are going to eat. 2. Some people worry about what they are going to wear. C. These are the rebukes for anxiety. vs 23-28 1. Life is more precious than food. v 23, Matt. 4:4 a). Our life is more valuable than the birds. v 24, Matt. 16:24 b). Our life can not be lengthened by worries. v 25, James 4:14-17 c). Our life demands trust and obedience to God. v 26, Isa. 41:10 2. Life is more precious than clothes. v 23 a). Our life is more glorious than Solomon in all of his glory. v 27 b). Our life will be properly clothed. v 28 D. This was the cure for anxiety. vs 29-30 1. Christians can overcome their doubtful mind. v 29, Mark 9:23 2. Disciples can trust in the providence of God. v 30, Phil. 4:13 IV. THE GREAT PURSUIT: VS 31-34 A. The is the purpose of that great pursuit. v 31 (Christians should seek the Kingdom of God.) Heb. 12:28-30 B. These are the blessings for that great pursuit. v 32 1. We as Christians can have freedom from our fears. v 32, 2 Tim. 1:7, Romans 8:7 2. We as disciples can become citizen of the Kingdom of God. v 32, Eph. 2:19-22 C. These are the requirements for that great pursuit. v 33 1. Christians must be benevolent. James 1:27 2. Saints should help the needy persons. Gal. 6:10 D. These were the reasons for that great pursuit. vs 33-34 1. Christians can have spiritual treasures in heaven. vs 33-34 2. Disciples have an inheritance in heaven. 1 Peter 1:3-4 V. THE RETURN OF OUR LORD: VS 35-40 A. These are the preparations for His return. v 35 1. Christians should be girdled with truth. Eph. 6:14 2. Saints must let their lights be shinning. Matt. 5:16 B. This is the expectation of His return. v 36 (Disciples should be looking for His return.) 2 Peter 3:10-12 C. This is the blessings of His return. v 37 (The righteous people will be with the Lord.) 1 Thess. 4:13-18 D. This is the uncertainty of His return. vs 38-39 1. Our Lord could come at the second watch: before midnight. vs 38-39 2. Our Lord could come at the third watch: after midnight. vs 38-39 E. This is the assurance of His return. v 40 (Jesus said, "For the Son of man cometh.") 2 Peter 3:9 VI. THE STEWARDSHIP OF LIFE: VS 41-48 A. These are the characteristics of the wise steward. vs 41-44 1. A wise steward is wise because he is obedient. vs 41-43 2. A wise steward will be eternally blessed. v 44 B. These are the traits of the unwise steward. vs 45-48 1. An unwise steward is unwise because he is disobedient. v 45 2. An unwise steward will be eternally punished. vs 46-48 VII. THE MISSION OF CHRIST: VS 49-53 A. Jesus would test life. v 49 B. Jesus would endure persecution. v 50 C. Jesus would cause divisions. vs 51-53 (The teachings of Christ causes divisions.) VIII. THE ACCEPTED TIME: VS 54-59 A. This was the failure to recognize the accepted time. vs 54-56 (Today is the accepted time for salvation.) B. This was the responsibility to recognize the accepted time. v 57 (We must judge correctly.) C. These are the blessings for recognizing the accepted time. vs 58-59 1. Christians would make preparation to meet God. v 58, Amos 4:12 2. Disciples will recognize that there is no escape from the judgment of God. v 59, Heb. 2:1-4 CHAPTER 13

I. THE SINNERS WHO ARE PERISHING: VS 1-5

A. These were some examples of sinners who had perished vs 1-2,4 (All sinners are perishing in the same way because they are lost in sin.) B. These are the reasons for their perishing. vs 2,4 (Those people who perished were sinners.) C. This was the way to keep from perishing. vs 3,5 (Those people should have repented of their sins.) D. This was the result of perishing. vs 3,5 (All sinners will be punished eternally.) II. THE BARREN FIG TREE: VS 6-9 A. This was the expectation of that fig tree. v 6 1. This fig tree did not produce any fruit. 2. The Lord expects us to produce fruit because we can be fruitful. John 15:1-8 B. This was the disappointment of that fig tree. v 7 1. That fig tree had been fruitless for three years. 2. The Lord expects us overcome the powers of sin. Romans 8:35-39 C. This was the delay for that fig tree. v 8 1. That fig tree would be given one more change to produce fruit. 2. The Lord delays His judgment for our own good. 2 Peter 3:9 D. This was the responsibility of that fig tree. v 9 1. That fig tree would be accountable for its deeds. 2. All people are accountable for their deeds. Heb. 2:1-4, Acts 17:30-31 III. JESUS HEALED A WOMAN: VS 10-17 A. This was the preparation for her being healed. v 10 1. Jesus was teaching the word of God. 2. A Christian must be a teacher of the word of God. Heb. 8:10-11 B. This was her need to be healed. v 11 1. She had a physical infirmity for eighteen years. 2. Our spiritual infirmity is sin. Eph. 2:1-3, Isa. 59:1-2 C. This was her opportunity to be healed. vs 12-13 1. Jesus healed her of that infirmity. 2. Christ can heal our spiritual infirmities which is sin. 1 Cor. 15:1-4 D. This was the opposition for her being healed. vs 14-16 1. Many of the Jews though it was unlawful for here to be healed on the Sabbath day. 2. In overcoming the sinful world, we will have many temptations and persecutions. James 1:12, 2 Tim. 3:12 E. This was the results of her being healed. v 17 1. All the people rejoiced over the glorious things which was done by our Lord. 2. Christians can rejoice over the glorious things which our Lord has done do for them. Acts 8:39, Phil. 4:7 IV. THE GROWTH OF THE KINGDOM: VS 18-21 A. The Kingdom can grow in great size. vs 18-19 B. The Kingdom can grow in great numbers. vs 20-21 V. THE VALUE OF SALVATION: VS 22-30 A. This was the concern for salvation. vs 22-23 (They asked the Lord, "Are there few that be saved?") B. This was the opportunity for salvation. v 24 (We must "strive to enter in at the strait gate.") C. This was the limitation for salvation. vs 24-25 (There is only a limited time in which we have to prepare to meet our God.) Amos 4:12, Heb. 3:7 D. This will be the plea for salvation. vs 25-38 (Those persons who are lost will beg for salvation.) E. This will be the scope of salvation. v 29 (There will be people who will be saved from all parts of the earth.) F. This will be the blessings for salvation. v 30 (There will be equality for all those persons who are saved.) VI. JESUS LAMENTED OVER JERUSALEM: VS 31-35 A. This was the circumstances for His lamentation. vs 31-33 (Herod was planning to kill Jesus.) B. This was the cause for His lamentation. vs 34-35 (Jerusalem had killed many of the prophets which God had sent unto them.) CHAPTER 14

I. JESUS HEALED THE MAN WHO HAD THE DROPSY: VS 1-6

A. This was the invitation of Jesus. v 1 (One of the chief Pharisees invited Jesus into his house to eat bread on the Sabbath.) B. This was the opposition against Jesus. (They watched Jesus upon that occasion.) C. This was the need for Jesus. v 2 (There was a man who was sick with the dropsy.) D. This was the reasoning of Jesus. v 3 (Jesus asked, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath day?") E. This was the power of Jesus. v 4 (Jesus healed him, and let him go.) F. This was the wisdom of Jesus. vs 5-6 (The reasoning of Jesus made them to be quit.) II. THE VALUE OF HUMILITY: VS 7-14 A. These are the needs for humility. vs 7-9 1. Humility eliminates self-exaltation. vs 7-8, Romans 12:3 2. Humbleness removes shame. v 9, 1 Peter 5:6 B. These are the commandments for humility. v 10 (We must develop and practice humility.) James 4:6 C. This is the reason for humility. v 11 (God will exalts the humble.) James 4:10 D. These are the reward for humility. vs 12-14 1. Humility will bring a reward in this life. vs 12-13, Luke 18:14 2. Humbleness will be eternally rewarded. v 14, Prov. 29:23 III. THE GREAT INVITATION: VS 15-24 A. These are the extensions of that invitation. vs 15-17 1. The great supper is prepared. v 16 a). Each person can be spiritually satisfied. Matt. 5:6 b). No person should not live by physical standards. Matt. 4:4 2. The invitation is for all persons to come to that great feast. vs 16-17 a). Each person is commanded to come. v 16, Matt. 11:28-30 b). Each person is exhorted to come. v 17, Isa. 1:18:20 c). Each person is encouraged to come. v 17, Rev. 22:17 B. These are the rejections of that invitation. vs 18-20 1. These people made the following excuses for not coming to the feast. a). One person was a lover of his land. v 18 b). One person was a lover of his cattle. v 19 c). One person was a lover of his wife. v 20 2. These are the excuses which are made today for not coming to the feast. a). Some people love the world more that they love the Lord. 1 John 2:15-17 b). Some people love their business more than they love the Lord. Matt. 6:33 c). Some people love their families more than they love the Lord. Eph. 6:1-4 C. These were the results of that invitation. vs 21-24 1. Those excuses were not accepted by the Lord. Romans 8:37, Matt. 22:12 2. The anger of God was intensified against them. v 21, Heb. 12:28-29 3. Other people were invited to the feast. Acts 17:24-25 4. The wicked persons were excluded from that feast. v 24, 2 Thess. 1:7-9 IV: THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP: VS 25-35 A. These are the requirement of discipleship. vs 25-27 1. We as Christians must hear the words of Jesus. v 25, Heb. 3:12-13 2. We as saints should love God more than we love our families. v 26, Matt. 22:36-40 3. We as disciples need to follow Christ. v 27, 1 Peter 2:21 B. These are the reasons for discipleship. vs 28-33 1. No person can afford to loose his soul. vs 28-30, Matt. 20:28 2. No person can defeat the powers of God. vs 31-33, Acts 5:39 C. These are the blessings of discipleship. vs 34-35 1. The disciples are the salt of the earth. Matt. 5:13 2. The saints can be eternally blessed. vs 34-35, James 1:12
