I. THE INTRODUCTION OF THE LETTER: VS 1-2

II PAUL EXPRESSED HIS LOVE FOR TIMOTHY: VS 3-8
A. These are the ways by which Paul expressed his love for Timothy.

2. Paul desired to see Timothy. v 4, 3 John 3-4

I. BEING A CHRISTIAN SOLDIER: VS 1-7

1. A Christian soldier should not entangle himself in the affairs

3:2 II. THE RESURRECTED CHRIST: VS 8-13
A. This is the assurance of His resurrection. v 8

B. This is the power of His resurrection. v 9
1. The word of God can not be bound. v 9, Heb 4:12

III. BEING A DISCIPLE OF CHRIST: VS 14-18
A. These are the requirements for being a disciple of Christ. vs 14-16
1. A disciple must remind other persons of the truth of God. v 14
a). The truth of God can make us from our sins. John 8:31-32
b). The truth of God will convert our soul. 1 Peter 1:21-22
c). The truth of God can edify us. Acts 20:32
d). The truth of God must be preached. 2 Tim. 4:1-5
2. A disciple must study the word of God. v 15
a). A brother in Christ can not add unto the word of God, nor can
he take from the word of God. Deut. 12:32
b). A Christian should not twist the scriptures of God. 2 Peter 3:15-16
c). A saint must mediate upon the word of God. Psa. 1:1-3
3. A disciple must refuse unsound doctrine. v 16
a). A brother in Christ can not accept the doctrines of men. Matt.
15:8-9
b). A Christian must try the doctrines which are being taught. 1 John
4:1
c). A saint should mark those persons who cause divisions among them.
Romans 16:17-18
B. These are the blessings for being a disciple. vs 17-18
1. A Christian would not be deceived by false doctrines. v 18
a). False teachers can deceive us. 1 Peter 2:1-3
b). The teachers of Satan are transformed into an angel of light.
2 Cor. 11:14-15
2. A saint would not have his faith overthrown by false teaching.
v 18, Jude 3-4
IV. A VESSEL OF HONOR: VS 19-21
A. These are the reasons for being a vessel of honor. v 19
1. The foundation of God is sure. v 19
a). The foundation of Christ is a firm foundation. 1 Cor. 3:11, Heb.
12:28- 29
b). Christians are build upon the foundation of Christ. Eph. 2:20-22
2. The Lord knows His people. v 19
a). Our names in being a Christian are written in heaven. Luke 10:20
b). Our names in being a saint are written in the book of life. Rev.

B. These are the requirements for being a vessel of honor. v 19
1. Christians must name the name (the authority) of Christ. v 19,
Matt. 28:28- 20
a). Christians should confess His name. Phil. 2:5-11
b). Disciples must be saved in His name. Acts 4:12
2. Christians must depart from evil. v 19
a). Sin can not reign in our mortal bodies. Romans 6:12-13
b). Christians must serve God with their bodies. Romans 12:1-2
C. These are the blessings for being a vessel of honor. vs 20-21
1. A disciple would be a golden vessel of honor. v 20, 1 Peter 1:6-7
2. A saint would be a sanctified vessel of honor. v 21, Col. 1:13
3. A Christian would be prepared for every good work. v 21, Eph. 2:10
V. BEING A SERVANT OF GOD: VS 22-26
A. There are the requirements for being a servant of God. v 22
1. A servant of God must flee youthful passion. v 22, James 1:13-15
2. A Christian should follow after righteousness. v 22, Eph. 6:14
3. A disciple needs to increase his faith. v 22, 1 John 5:4
4. A saint ought to manifest love. v 22, Gal. 5:6
B. These are the proofs for being a servant of God. v 23
1. A servant of God would be doctrinally sound. v 23, Titus 3:9
2. A Christian would be using the scriptures in the proper way. v
23, 2 Tim. 3:16-17
C. These are the blessings for being a servant of God. vs 24-26
1. A servant of God would be gentle with all men. v 24, 1 Tim. 2:1-4
2. A disciple would be a teacher of the word of God. v 24, Heb. 5:14-16
3. A Christian would be patient with all men. v 24, 2 Peter 3:9
4. A saint would be opposing those persons who are in religious error.

CHAPTER 3
I. THE TRAITS OF THE LAST DAYS: VS 1-9
A. These will be the characteristics of those last days. v 1 (There
will be perilous times.)
B. These will be the traits of most people during those last days.
vs 2-5
1. Some people will become lovers of themselves. v 2, Luke 18:9-14
2. Other people will be without natural affection. v 3, Romans 1:21
3. Most people will be pleasure-seekers. v 4, Luke 12:19
4. The majority of the people will be religiously deceived. v 5, Jude
3-4
C. These are our instructions for those last days. v 5 (Christians
are to turn away from such people.) Romans 16:17-18
D. These will be the results of their works in those last days. vs
6-9
1. Those people who are deceived will become deceivers of other people.
v 6, 2 Cor. 11:14-15
2. Those people who are deceived will become spiritually deceived
themselves. v 7, 2 Thess 2:11-12
3. Those people who are deceived will resist the truth. v 8, 3 John

4. Those people who are deceived will have their folly exposed. v

II. THE EXPERIENCES OF PAUL: VS 10-11
A. These were the characteristics of his life. v 10
1. The doctrine of Paul was the gospel of Christ. v 10, 1 Cor. 2:1-4
2. The manner of Paul was a godly example. v 10, 1 Cor. 11:1
3. The faith of Paul was in the Lord. v 10, 1Tim.1:13
4. The longsuffering of Paul was to win Christ. v 10, Phil. 4:13-14
5. The charity of Paul was to give unto other people. v 10, Acts 20:35
6. The patient of Paul was to win the victory. v 10, 2 Tim. 4:6-8
B. These were the hardships of his life. v 11

1. The Lord delivered Paul from his hardships in life. v 11, Phil.

III. OUR PERSECUTIONS IN LIFE: VS 12-14
A. These are the certainties for our persecutions in life. v 12
1. All Christians will be tempted. James 1:2-4
2. All disciples will be Divinely disciplined. Heb. 12:5-11
B. These are the reasons for our persecutions in life. v 13
1. Evil men and seducers will wax worse and worse. v 13, 2 Peter 2:20
2. Evil men and seducers will deceive other people because they will
also be deceived themselves. v 13, 2 Peter 3:3-4
C. These are the ways to overcome our persecutions in life. v 14
1. Christians must endure unto the end so that they can be blessed.
v 14, James 5:11
2. Disciples should know the truth because there is spiritual strength
in truth. v 14, Acts 20:32
3. Saints need to know the Lord because He is their helper. v 14,
Heb. 13:5- 6
IV. THE VALUE OF THE SCRIPTURES: VS 15-17
A. These are the purposes of the scriptures. v 15
1. The scriptures can make us wise unto salvation. v 15, John 5:39
2. The scriptures will provide spiritual food for our soul. v 15,
Matt. 4:10
3. The scriptures are for our meditation. v 15, Psa. 1:1-3
B. This is the source of the scriptures. v 16
1. The scriptures are inspired of God. v 16, Rev. 14:13
2. The scriptures have been given unto us by the Holy Spirit. v 16,
2 Peter 2:20-21
C. These are the reasons for the scriptures. v 16
1. The scriptures are for our doctrine. v 16, Heb. 5:14-16
2. The scriptures are for our reproof. v 16, 2 Cor. 13:5
3. The scriptures are for our correction. v 16, Acts 8:18-24
4. The scriptures are for our instruction in righteousness. v 15,

D. These are the blessings of the scriptures. v 17
1. The scriptures can made us to be perfect. v 17, Eph. 4:17, Heb.

CHAPTER 4
I. PREACHING THE TRUE WORD OF GOD: VS 1-5
A. These are the charges which we have to faithfully preach the word
of God. v 1
1. Preachers are charged before God, who is their Creator, to faithfully
preach the true word of God. v 1, Gen. 1:26-27, 1 John 5:7
2. Preachers are charged before Christ, who is their Redeemer, to
faithfully preach the true word of God. v 1, Acts 2:34-38, Matt. 28:18-20
B. These are the ways in which preachers are to preach the true word
of God. v 2
1. A preacher must be consistent in his preaching. v 2, Rev. 3:15-16
2. A preacher needs to reprove everyone in his preaching. v 1, Eph.
5:11
3. A preacher should rebuke those persons who have sinned against
God. v 1, 1 Tim. 5:20
4. A preacher ought to exhort everyone to hear the word of God. v
2, Heb. 3:13
5. A preacher must be longsuffering in his preaching of the word of
God. v 2, 2 Peter 3:9
C. These are the reasons for preaching the true word of God. v 3
1. Some people will not endure sound doctrine. v 3, 2 Peter 3:3-4
2. Some people will hire false teachers to preach for them. v 3, 2
Peter 3:1- 3
3. Some people will depart from the faith. v 4, 1 Tim. 4:1-3
D. These are the requirements in preaching the word of God. v 5
1. A preacher must be watchful in all things. v 5, 1 Cor. 16:13
2. A preacher should endure affliction in his preaching. v 5, James
11:2-4
3. A preacher needs to do the work of an evangelist. v 5, James 5:19-20
4. A preacher should make full proof of his ministry. v 5, 1 Cor.
15:58
II. THE LAST TESTIMONY OF PAUL CONCERNING HIS DEATH: VS 6- 8
A. This was the assurance of his death. v 6
1. Paul would soon be offered.
2. Each person has an appointment with death. Heb. 9:27
B. This was the reality of his death. v 6
1. Paul would soon depart this life.
2. Each person could soon depart this life. James 4:13-15
C. These were the preparations which Paul had made for his death.

1. Paul had fought a good fight of faith. v 7, 1 Tim. 6:12
2. Paul had finished his course upon the earth. v 7, Heb. 12:1-2
3. Pal had kept the faith. v 7, Jude 3-4
D. This would be Paul's reward for his death. v 8
1. Paul would receive a crown of righteousness. v 8
2. All faithful Christians will receive a crown of life. James 1:12
III. THE COMPANIONSHIP OF PAUL: VS 9-18
A. These are the persons who had supported him. vs 9,11-13
1. Paul wanted Timothy to come unto him. v 9
2. Paul desired that Mark should come unto him. v 11
3. Paul had sent Tychicus to Ephesus. v 12
4. Paul had left his coat with Carpus. v 13
B. These are the persons who had opposed him. vs 10,14-16
1. Demas had left Paul for the pleasures of this world. v 10
2. Alexander, the coppersmith, had persecuted Paul. vs 14-15
3. Most of Paul's friends had left him. v 16
C. This is the One who really helped Paul to overcome his hardships.
vs 17-18
1. The Lord strengthened Paul for his hardships which he had to endure
in being a Christian. v 17, Phil. 4:13
2. The Lord delivered Paul from most of his evil deeds. v 18, 2 Cor.
12:7-10
IV. THE LAST SALUTATION OF PAUL: VS 19-22
A. Paul wanted his friends saluted. vs 19
B. Paul sent greeting from his friends. vs 20-21
C. Paul wanted the grace of Christ to be with Timothy. v 22
