(MLV) I know your works and, your affliction and your poverty (but you are rich) and the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and they are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.

Affected Teaching

A very important teaching has been omitted from this verse. Notice it starts out by the Lord saying, “I know thy works…” The church at Smyrna was working hard for the Lord to send forth the Gospel and as a result they were suffering much persecution for their deeds. The Lord Jesus Christ was acknowledging the fact that these Christians were working very hard on kingdom business but their testimony and works had reduced them to a state of poverty because of the persecution. With this missing "works," the reader of minority text translations just thinks they are poor not really knowing why.  You lose the contrast here that is in the other 6 congregations named.
