A Brief Study of Enoch

Introduction:

I have many books in my library with studies of men. I, not to my knowledge, have not a one that deals with Enoch. Enoch does not have several chapters belonging to him alone, nor has he parted seas, or been chosen by God to be the direct bloodline to Christ. But, Enoch walked with God. Talk about a rare line of terms. Not many where listed as men whom "walked with God". It is only said in that phrase of one other in the whole Bible (Noah), and we will look at that in this lesson. We will also look at something of which Enoch shares with only one other in the Bible.

I.    Some facts about Enoch

Enoch was the child of Jared
KJV Genesis 5:18
18. And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch:

Enoch bore Methuselah
KJV Genesis 5:21
21.   And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah:

Seventh from Adam (Adam, Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared, and Enoch) Genesis 5:1-18, Luke 3:37-38
KJV Jude 1:14
And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,

II.    What makes Enoch different from other Old Testament men?

He is only one of two whom the phrase "walked with God" applied to his name – and he walked with God for 300 years past his boring of Methuselah
KJV Genesis 5:22
And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

The other to whom this phrase was attached
KJV Genesis 6:9
These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

Enoch was one of only two to be translated from life to heaven passing over death
KJV Hebrews 11:5
By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

The Other whom was "translated"
KJV 2 Kings 2:9-11
9. And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
10. And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
11.  And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

III.   How does this lesson apply to us?

We need to want to walk in good works
KJV Ephesians 2:10
10. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Following God and walking in love
KJV Ephesians 5:1-2
1. Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
2. And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

We need to walk and please God
KJV 1 Thessalonians 4:1-2
1. Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.
2. For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.

Using the word of God as a light to our paths
KJV Psalms 119:105
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

IV.   Seeking Christ and Right ways above all else

Seek and ye shall live
KJV Amos 5:4
4. For thus saith the Lord unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:

Seek first the kingdom of God
KJV Matthew 6:33
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Seek the things above
KJV Colossians 3:1-4
1.If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2.Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
3. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
4. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

Put your treasures above and your heart will be there
KJV Matthew 6:19-21
19. Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21.  For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Conclusion:

What do you want out of life – eternal suffering – or eternity that is life much more than here?
