The Sermon on the Mount (Part 10)

Matthew 5:31-32

Text: 31. It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

32. But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

Introduction: With marriage, divorce and remarriage being such an issue this is a vital part of the text. Divorce rates are high, folks marry for reasons other than love.

What Moses said: Deuteronomy 24:1-4

      I.   New Testament Teachings on Divorce and Remarriage
Matthew 19:3-9 fornication – Mark 10:2-12 Fornication –
II.   Till Death do you part
Romans 7:1-3 and I Corinthians 7:39-40
III.   What is Fornication and the punishment un-repented of?
Vines "illicit sexual intercourse"

I Corinthians 7:2, Galatians 5:19-21, and Jude verse 7

      IV.   The "what if’s"
  • What if James D. Bales is right? If he is then alien sinners are not amenable to the Law of Christ. Is this right? No, those non-Christians on the day of Pentecost were told to repent (Acts 2:38). Those non-Christians 1 chapter later were told to repent (Acts 3:19). Repentance is in need when one sins. Sin is transgression of the law I John 3:4. Thus, to be sinners they are amenable to the law.
  • What if my wife/husband just up and leaves me for any reason other than fornication? I Corinthians 7:10-11
  • Can someone leave someone for reasons other than fornication? I Corinthians 7:15. Does that free up for remarriage? Was it for the cause of fornication Matthew 5:31-32?
  • The "what if’s" are best answered by going to the text and by being honest. Those questions will be questions that each individual will answer for THEMSELVES Romans 14:12. The preacher, your friends, no one else but you will answer for those things!
Conclusion: God may have winked at some things then, but now…Acts 17:30
