Introduction:

It is very difficult to stand before a congregation and lead a prayer, teach a lesson, wait on the Lord’s Table, Sing, and pass the contribution plate. It takes knowledge to complete these tasks. This lesson is set to help in Public Service.

I. Leading In Prayer – Things to remember

1. Prayer is to the father
2. Prayer is through Jesus name
3. Prayer is to be humble
4. Prayer is not a show

A. Prayer to the father/not in vain repetitions
KJV Matthew 6:7-13
7. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
9. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11. Give us this day our daily bread.
12. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

B. Through the Name of Christ
KJV Ephesians 5:20
20. Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

KJV Colossians 3:17
17. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Note: This is what is known as ending your prayer “in the name of Jesus Christ” then concluding with Amen.

C. Humbly we should pray
Luke 18:9-14
9. And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
10. Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
11. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
12. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
13. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
14. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

D. Prayer is not a show/We must see it to God not ourselves (remember we are serving in a worship service, worship to God)!
KJV Matthew 6:1-5
1. Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
2. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
3. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
4. That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
5. And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

II. The Lord’s Supper

1. This is a worship only on the First Day of the Week
2. Includes the unleavened bread and fruit of the vine
3. Is a time of reflection and examination
4. The Fruit of the Vine does not cleanse us!
5. We must offer our prayers the same as we talked about in point I.

A. The First Day of The Week
KJV Acts 20:7
7. And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.

B. The institution of the Lord’s Supper – in remembrance of him (Bread then Fruit of the Vine)
KJV Matthew 26:26-29
26. And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. (Note: Unleavened verse 17)
27. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
28. For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
29. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.

C. A Time of Examination/Reflection

KJV 1 Corinthians 11:28
28. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

D. The Fruit of the Vine does not Cleanse us

It is the blood that cleanses us, through baptism (Acts 22:16 and I John 1:7)

III. The Contribution

A. On the first day of the week (I Corinthians 16:1-2)
B. Not the Lord’s Supper
C. Needs to be done cheerfully as purposed in our hearts (II Corinthians 9:7)

IV. Singing

A. To be done vocally (Ephesians 5:19, and Colossians 3:16)
B. Since we teach in song (Colossians 3:16), we need to sing Scriptural Songs

V. Preaching/Teaching

A. Preach ONLY God’s word (II Timothy 4:2, and I Peter 4:11)
B. Prepare so that you will be able to prick hearts with God’s word
C. Tip from a preacher- spend at least 5-8 hours of in depth study on topics you will present. Be ready for questions! (I Peter 3:15)
D. Do not teach if you are not ready. (Hebrews 5:12)

Conclusion:

These are only brief tips. You should be sure that you fully understand what you are doing prior to doing it. Worship is not a trial by error type of thinking!
